Review:
Son of Hamas
This is an extraordinary and moving book. It is the amazing story of Mosab Hassan Yousef, son of a founding leader of Hamas, from early radicalisation, to Israeli spy, to his conversion to Christianity and finally to exile in the USA.
It is an astute political analysis of the troubles in the Middle East from someone who has seen the conflict from its very heart, and from the heart of Hamas’ leadership.
Yousef’s journey brings him to a stark realisation that only the message of Jesus’ radical love and forgiveness can heal the deep wounds in this region.
The book is at its best when we see the growing friendship between Mosab and his Israeli handler Loai – and his dramatic decision to become a spy in order to save lives. It also offers a rare insight into the lives of ordinary Palestinians and the brutalisation they have faced, even from their own side.
I guarantee that you won’t be able to put Son of Hamas down. It is a book with depth and insight and a great deal of heart. I urge you to buy it if you are interested in the Middle East or how Christianity still has something to say in politics and religion.
HIGH: The tense story and gripping dialogue.
LOW: The political analysis is deep and so needs concentration.
