Review:

Rosie: Note to self

Share |

This romcom novel is about a 20-something American called Rosie whose happy life as a newlywed suddenly takes a terrible turn, leaving her bereft in a foreign land (Oxford, England) with few friends or family around her.

But Rosie bravely decides not to abandon her life in Oxford for the comfort of her New York home. In an echo of the story of Ruth and Naomi, Rosie puts her equally bereft motherin- law before herself and commits to looking after her – no matter what happens. Loyalty and understanding underpin the new relationships Rosie discovers through her hardship.

This is a heart-warming read with a gentle pace and tender moments of humour and sadness. The characters are fun and mostly believable. Although some of the events lack detail, the story is well written, with a few interesting turns towards the end to keep you turning the pages.

HIGH: The relationships between various characters give the tale enjoyable colour.

LOW: Pivotal events seem to be quickly forgotten, which leaves the reader slightly unsatisfied.
