Savage Shepherds

Adam Harbinson

We’re a bit short of useful books on spiritual abuse – probably because people who’ve been through it find it really difficult to write about their experience. Adam Harbinson has written up his story of being part of a ‘heavy shepherding’ outfit in Ulster. The scary thing is that you can be right in the middle of an abusive church and still not be able to leave. That’s what happened to Harbinson. And even when he left it wasn’t over. He tells us that the church members ruined his business, got him in trouble with the police, and damaged his health. Watch out for the church that is controlling over your lifestyle, time and money; has a monopoly on the truth; has a self-appointed charismatic leader; doesn’t allow you to question the teaching; tends to control your access to God (through the leadership).

High:

It’s a crucial warning about abusive churches.

Low:

Harbinson doesn’t seem to have got over it yet.
