Review:
Church Music
I have to admit a deep ambiguity in my response to church music and especially the modern stuff. Too often it is the less talented younger brother of the real stuff – the music that fills the regular charts.
But now I have a reason to celebrate and that reason is David Crowder *Band’s Church Music. With a nod to Placebo and Muse this is a truly ‘proper’ album. It has an edginess and experimental feel, with cutting guitar, piercing melodies and, above all else, depth. This sounds like a band who live in the world as it is, and, despite a strong message in the lyrics, it is above all music and not preaching. Stand out tracks are ‘Eastern Hymn’ and ‘The Veil’. But each one is a winner.
HIGH: Atmospheric production and gritty vocals.
LOW: Could have pruned the odd weaker song.
