Review:
Great and Glorious
With the Great and Glorious yfriday could be about to step out of the shadows of some of their better-known peers.
The album is designed to be used in church services – the booklet contains the chords, and an accompanying DVD even has a tutorial from singer and songwriter Ken Riley. Non-guitarists may feel the extra disc could have been put to better use, but it is an interesting innovation.
Most importantly though, these songs, with their big, memorable choruses, sound like they have been written to be sung by congregations. The greatest compliment one can pay the band is it sounds as though Brenton Brown’s melodic influence is all over this record. In truth he’s not featured, but co-writes with Matt Redman, Tim Hughes and Martin Smith to ensure the quality stays high throughout.
HIGH: The rousing ‘Come let us worship’.
LOW: ‘You will not steal our children’ – a strange title for a song, and the lyrics somewhat distract from a great backing track.
