Review:

It is well

Kutless are a bit of a rarity – a Christian band with a genuine rough edge. So how do they fare when tackling a variety of standards and new creations in their own inimitable style?

At times the combination of old classic hymn and modern arrangement is extraordinary. Title track ‘It is Well’ keeps all the original depth of the hymn and adds a relevance and edginess that takes it to a new level. But there are odd moments that verge on high comedy. Take the reworking of ‘What Faith Can Do’, where they sound like Ronan Keating at a friend’s wedding. But it’s only a short wobble and they soon regain their footing with slice after slice of solid Christian rock. Best of the bunch is ‘Remember Me’ which is both high grunge and orchestral at the same time. Kutless have done a difficult thing, but they have done it well.

HIGH: The chunky rock sound throughout.

LOW: The brief flirtation with being a boyband.
