Review:
Source of every hour
This is frustratingly good. Much loved for her pure voice, Cathy Burton has never sounded better. This is her most gorgeous backing, too: crisp and warm; light without being thin; and splashed with sonic colour. This short set, full of strong, upbeat, singable songs – which reprises and refines four songs from the live Redeemer disc – is broken in places with more reflective material like ‘Purify’, with its rippling piano.
So why the frustration? There is little hint of her earlier raw, everyday life material. ‘Cling to the Cross’ and ‘Refuge’ are riddled with cliché, while ‘The Way’ has a huge heart, but little poetry. Songs settle for skimming the surface without delving deeper.
Written for new church plant, and rich with Sunday morning fare, this could do with more about Monday to Saturday.
HIGH: Sonically lush, it is stuffed full of impeccable melodies.
LOW: Several good songs could have been great.
