Review:

Taste

Philippa Hanna’s natural pop-quirkiness mixes well with appealing overtones of RnB and even traces of 60s soul, marginalising the sound of rock into limited influence. Her second studio release might be eclectic and difficult to label, but Hanna’s character and competence shine through every song.

Standout tracks ‘Summer Bride’, ‘Work in Progress’ and ‘All Those Years’ reveal her gift for storytelling; whereas ‘Where do I Go?’ and ‘Alright’ show a more meditative side. ‘Predictable’ exposes her recognisable template – acoustic guitar and a versatile, bouncy, word-wise voice. The bonus track, with perhaps the most memorable chorus on the album, points to a more edgy, funky Hanna, promising something exciting in the years to come.

HIGH: The ‘live instrument’ production.

LOW: 38 minutes?
