The universal broadcast: Live

It’s worship, but not as you know it – Jarrow indie rockers YFriday have made a storming live album here. This concert, recorded at Derby’s Riverside Centre in 2007, consists of 15 passionate and affirming guitar-based rock songs that are stuffed full of great hooks and catchy choruses, and captured like lightning in a bottle on this CD/DVD set. Both open with an aural montage of Neil Armstrong’s ‘one small step’ speech as he became the first man to walk on the moon and Richard Strauss’ ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ (the theme of ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’), just as After the Fire used to come on to the ‘Thunderbirds’ theme.

Dez, Danny, Ken and Gav give their all in front of an enthusiastic audience on such favourites as ‘Universal’, ‘Hands up’, ‘Holy, holy, holy’, ‘Everlasting God’ and ‘Revolution’, though ‘Rise’ sounds like a first cousin of Paul Simon’s ‘Late in the evening’.

High: For anyone who thinks Christian rock is an oxymoron, this live album will be a revelation.

Low: There isn’t one – a brilliantly produced CD/DVD package that will also appeal to fans of the Kaiser Chiefs.
