Theology

Sinead O’Connor

Sinead O’Connor was never a singer to just court controversy; she married it, had its children and then ran off with its best friend. But ‘Theology’ is about as far away from her previous incarnation as the artist the tabloids loved to hate as you could possibly get. It’s a collection of songs written by Sinead herself which are drenched in scriptures like Psalm 91 and 130. This is an album full of spiritual concerns. Although the references never make it as far as Jesus or the New Testament, there are nods to the Rastafarian movement instead. Both disks contain the same songs, just recorded in very different ways. The acoustic session in Dublin is the better of the two and serves as a useful reminder of what a powerful performer Sinead O’Connor is. Some of these songs may not be to everyone’s taste, but even after all these years, nothing really does compare to this truly great singer.

High:

This is a return to form in the very best sense of the phrase.

Low:

The London session is a bit overdone.
